Can Markets Solve Problems?

Speakers: Daniel Neyland & Vera Ehrenstein

1.15pm-2.15pm, 12th May

PSH 326, Goldsmiths

PERC members Daniel Neyland and Vera Ehrenstein will be giving a talk entitled ‘Can Markets Solve Problems?’ at the Goldsmiths Graduate Festival. The talk will engage with a variety of market-based interventions designed to resolve public problems. By comparing carbon trading, advance market commitments for vaccines in low income countries and social impact bonds for children at-risk, the presentation will explore how attempts are made to use notions such as exchange, price, valuation and competition to address collective concerns. A number of recent experiments will be used to highlight alternative ways of raising questions about these interventions. This will draw on recent and on-going work from the MISTS project: www.marketproblems.com
